Then after that trauma, we were put to sleep on out tummies, in baby cribs covered with brightly coloured lead-based paints. We had no childproof (or senior proof come to that) lids on our medicine bottles, door or cabinets and when we rode our…....

Brave Scout rewarded by South East Coast Ambulance Service.

South East Coast Ambulance Service NHS Trust (SECAmb) rewarded the quick-thinking actions of an 11-year-old boy who saved his mum and best friend from a burning car.

Robert McGowan was presented with a bravery certificate by paramedics at a special ceremony held at Grayshott Scout Hall, Grayshott.

The recognition came after Robert, known as Rabbie to friends and family, forced open the car door window and helped mum, Karen, and best friend, Tom, escape after a collision.

Their car went out of control and hit the central reservation on the A3 at Thursley on Saturday, 1 December, last year.  After the collision the car somersaulted in the air numerous times before landing in a ditch, already engulfed in flames.

Paramedic, John Vivian, said: “Rabbie’s initiative and determination, displayed in the face of this adversity, deserved recognition.

“In my opinion, if he had not acted so very quickly then all three would have perished in the fire that consumed the car so rapidly,

“I have worked for the ambulance service for 14 years and have never seen bravery like this.  He really did save their lives that day.”

Fortunately no one received any serious injuries in the incident.

Rabbie said: “I don’t remember a lot, but I remember being in the car on its side and I remember the fire.

“I didn’t have time to be scared, I was just thinking about how to get out of the fire.  We were all a bit shocked afterwards though.”

Karen, who is very proud of her son’s actions, said: ”I was trying to open my door and window in the front, but they wouldn’t move.  The back doors were jammed too.  Rabbie managed to force the handle on the rear window until it had opened a bit. Then he pushed at the glass until there was a big enough gap to escape. He got himself and Tom out, before helping me through the window too.

“The car was destroyed very quickly and I dread to think what would have happened if Rabbie had not acted so quickly.

“I’m so proud of Rabbie. Not many people would be that brave or calm at any age, let alone at 11.”

The new members will join four existing independent members on the 17-strong Authority later this year along with nine councillor members from East and West Sussex county councils and Brighton & Hove City Council. At least one of the new members must be a magistrate.

Lionel Barnard, chairman of the Authority, has no doubts about the increasingly important role that police authorities have to play, both locally and nationally, or the contribution that is made by the independent members. "We are firmly of the opinion that there must be local accountability and this is a great chance for just about anyone who is over 21 and lives or works in Sussex to contribute towards securing an efficient and effective police service, consulting the people of Sussex about the work of the police and building a partnership between the police and local communities," he said.

Members are expected to keep abreast of national and local developments affecting policing, participate in public consultation, attend meetings, committees and working groups, work in partnership with the police and the local community and take a keen interest in aspects of policing.

The role does demand good communication skills and other relevant skills, experience and knowledge, for example in management, business, finance, diversity, community or race relations, are also very useful. In addition, members must have the ability to represent a wide range of people in the community and provide a constructive challenge to accepted views. Successful applicants will take up their positions in the Autumn and serve a term of office up until March 2013.

For details of how to apply, call Sussex Police Authority on 01273 482351 or visit its website - www.sussexpoliceauthority.gov.uk. Applications close on Friday 23 May.

Police Authority looks for new members

If you have an independent view on policing in Sussex, you could be the sort of person Sussex Police Authority is seeking to fill one of four independent member vacancies.

The Authority is considering applications for the positions now and is looking for a wide range of people fully reflecting the rich local diversity of the communities served by Sussex Police. Successful applicants can expect to work 7-10 hours a week on average in their role, in exchange for an allowance and expenses.
