The Rogate Christmas Market Christmas may still seem a long way off, but it’s not too soon to start planning the Christmas Market which will take place on Saturday 27th November from 10 am till 2pm at Rogate Village Hall. As usual, there will be many exciting stalls selling home-baked goods, toys, bric-a-brac and gifts as well as a raffle and other attractions. This year we will be supporting four interesting and worthwhile charities/causes: The Home Farm Project in the Gambia Children’s Relief Bethlehem providing medical care for all children affected by the conflict between Israel and Palestine The Borien Educational Foundation for Southern Africa. Our own Youth Group in Rogate, depending on a suitable project being formulated This month we are going to focus on the Home Farm Project in the Gambia, West Africa (www.africaorganics.org) , which was started by a former Rogate resident, Sandy Wansbury. The Gambia is one of the poorest countries in Africa and this extremely worthwhile project aims to provide sustainable livelihoods for young men in rural areas who would otherwise migrate to the capital to seek work and possibly end up as beach boys harassing tourists or, more seriously, fall into the hands of unscrupulous people-traffickers with promises of passages to Europe, often in small overcrowded boats with fatal results. As a result of this migration, villages are often left without any young men to work on the family farms, family units are split up and food becomes scarcer. The first Home Farm named Bushtown has now been owned and run successfully by the young men of the village for five years and more are being developed in other villages as funding permits. The young men are encouraged in their pursuit of farming by using improved methods, especially organic methods, and by an improved water supply through the digging of new wells, which is very important as the Gambia experiences a long dry season of up to seven months. This means that they can grow enough to feed their families and also have produce left to sell. Sandy herself spends most of her time in the Gambia overseeing these projects, and as her team seems to be the only NGO working on the ground in this area of development, they need every help they can get from their supporters in the form of funds and increasing awareness of their excellent work. Details about the other charities will follow in the next two months. Please support these great causes by attending or offering to volunteer at the Christmas Market. If you are going to be away, donations will be very gladly accepted by Rev. Edward Doyle, The Vicarage, Fyning Lane, Rogate, GU31 5EE (01730 821576) |
