ROGATE BOWLING CLUB MAY DAY TOURNAMENT 2009 The cool weather on Bank Holiday Monday did not stop Rogate Bowling Club from holding a very enjoyable and successful May Day Tournament. Sixteen teams from fourteen clubs competed throughout the day for the Richardson Trophy. This was won by Pagham Bowling Club after a thrilling final against Milford Bowling Club. Rogate entered three triples and two of our teams were pipped for a place in the final on shot difference only. The teams were Sid Newman, Roger Dowsett and Margaret Coles (Rogate A), Nick Anderson, Gill Burgess and Dougie Mann (Rogate B) and Ted Clarke, Jean Clasby and Jim Knight (Rogate C). Lunches and teas were provided for the contestants and Tombola ran throughout the day. Game Set and Match from Chichester generously provided the trophies, and were available on site for contestants to purchase clothes or equipment. The day concluded with the presentation of the Trophies. The Tournament provided an opportunity for clubs who have helped us raise the funds for our new clubhouse, to sample our new facilities. We raised nearly £800 throughout the day and this will prove a welcome boost towards our funds for furnishing the new Clubhouse. Rogate played its first League matches on Tuesday 12th May. The ‘A’ team played away at Alton Social and narrowly lost by 46 shots to 50. The three triples were Sid Newman/Margaret Coles/ Jim Whitcher (won 21/13), Don Windle/Brian Ferkins /Roger Goodes (won 15/13), and Nick Anderson/Doug Mann/Jim White (lost 10/24). The team gained 2 points (one point for each rink win). The ‘B’ team played Cranleigh at home and won by 54 shots to 48. The three triples here were Brian Clasby/Roger Dowsett/Jean Clasby (won 25/13), Pete Albery/Dave Simons/Sheila Simons (drew 17/17) and John Andrews/Tom Hearn/Rosemary Hearn (lost 12/18). The team gained 3.5 points (1 winning rink, one drawn rink and 2 points for an overall win). The triple of Brian, Roger and Jean had a “hot shot” on one end (they won the maximum of 9 shots). This is highly unusual and many congratulations go to this triple. Rogate won their friendly against Petersfield on 16th May by 53 shots to 31.
