Rogate Bowling Club is a well established Club founded in 1930. We are affiliated to Bowls England and to the Sussex County Bowling Association. We have four rinks and a new Clubhouse providing changing rooms, toilets and an area for refreshment. The club has around 50 playing members and several social members and is self financing. Membership is open to men and women by annual subscription of £35 with a joining fee of £5 for new members. Junior Members (i.e. those in full time education) may join for a reduced annual subscription. We cater for beginners and serious players, with plenty of competitive matches and club competitions. We also have two teams competing in the Three Counties Bowls Fellowship. Rogate Bowling Club August 2010 Ladies Match at The Bourne A team of four ladies (Gill Burgess, Margaret Coles, Ruth McQuillin and Sheila Simons) joined The Bourne Bowling Club for their Ladies Powder Puff on Saturday 14th August. We had played 15 ends when the heavens opened together with thunder and lightning, and the rinks were soon flooded. The ladies retired to the Club House for a sumptuous tea. While we did not win the match, between us we came away with a couple of raffle prizes, a spot prize for a table decoration, the Powder Puff for the lowest shot difference, and a rink prize. The winner was from Fleet and the runner up from Haslemere. Three of the Rogate team The flooded rinks Jim Whitcher Trophy On Wednesday 18th August we played the second leg of the Jim Whitcher Memorial Trophy. This trophy has been donated by Heather Whitcher, whose husband Jim was a long standing member of Rogate Bowling Club, and sadly passed away last year. We will play for the Trophy each year against Medstead, whose captain is Stan Whitcher, Jim’s brother. We played a match at Medstead in April, with the return mach in August. This year, Medstead won with a combined score for the two matches of 142 against Rogate’s 111. Heather Whitcher presenting the The Jim Whitcher Trophy Trophy to Stan Whitcher |

Rogate Bowling Club – July 2010 Apart from a short “blip” the fine weather continues, which encourages good bowling. In the Three Counties Competitions, the following have progressed to the third round: Singles: Brian Clasby Pairs: Don Windle/Sid Newman, and Gill Burgess/Nick Anderson Triples: Don Windle/Gill Burgess/Doug Mann and Roger Dowsett/Jean Clasby/Brian Clasby Cup Competitions: Sadly we are out o the Hunter Cup and Petersfield Cup. We lost to Alton Social in the Hunter Cup and to Weyburn in the Petersfield Cup – both by only a few shots. We have progressed to the third round of the Holbrook Cup beating Graffham 58-49. Our opponents for the next round are not yet known. Three Counties League: The League season lasts for 14 weeks ending on Tuesday 3rd August. At week 10, the ‘A’ team was narrowly hanging on to the top position in Division 2 with 35 points. Over the next four weeks each Club will be fighting hard to avoid relegation. The ‘B’ team has 18.5 points and are in third position in Division 4. There are fewer Clubs in this Division so there is not the opportunity to gain as many points. The Fred White Trophy was played on 26th June. The winners were Angela Crocker (a new member this year), Dorothy Bostwick, Frank McQuillin and Leon Hayes. On Sunday 26th June, a trip of Jean and Brian Clasby and Gill Burgess were invited to play in the 75th Anniversary Celebration match at Frensham Bowling Club. In a closely fought final between us and Graffham, the Rogate team emerged the winners. In this our 80th Anniversary year, the President’s Day (Sunday 18th July) was an invitation Day planned to say “Thank You” to all the Bowling Clubs who have supported us by buying raffle tickets etc. during the construction of our new clubhouse. 32 players took to the green in beautiful sunshine. The winners were Rowledge and Four Marks with 8 points. Runners up – West Dean and Rogate B with 6 points. The day ended with an excellent tea laid on by the ladies, an 80th Anniversary cake made by Dorothy Bostwick, was cut and a toast proposed to the continuing prosperity of Rogate Bowling Club.
Rogate Bowling Club – August 2010 The bowling season is rapidly drawing to a close, which means that competitions have reached their peak. – Finals Days at 4/5 September. Pairs Day on 24th July proved a great success resulting in a final between Brenda Albery/Gill Burgess & Rosemary Hearn/Malcolm Buse to be played on 4/5 September. Congratulations to the ‘A’ Team for wining The Three Counties League Division 2 and gaining promotion to Division 1 for next season. The triple of Don Windle/Gill Burgess/Doug Mann will play a Three Counties quarter final against a team from Milford on 27th August. The Bowls Club did their usual Target Bowls at Rogate Fete on 7th August and in spite of the rain we were able to hand over £66.00 to the Fete Committee, The winners were: Child – Jemma with 10 shots – well done! Adult – Richard Goodger (Chichester) with 22 shots – also well done! Each received vouchers - £5 and £10 respectively. The semi-final of The Holbrook Cup is to be played on 10th August between Rogate and Petersfield. Finally, the Gentlemen beat the Ladies in a tournament on 31st July.
