Rogate and District Computer Club Latest News & Updates:
Rogate and District Computer Club July Update: There will be no Computer Club meeting in August but we will get together again in the Village Hall at 7.30 pm on Monday 12th September. All members enjoy helping and encouraging each other as we try to keep up to date with what is going on in the technological world and each month we cover a different topic or topics. From researching family trees in April, to a presentation about free computer programs in May and then further information about both Publisher and Excel in June, we’ve continued to benefit from variety in our meetings so far this year. In July we were reminded about the importance of computer maintenance. This was in the form of a Power Point presentation by teenager Holly Woodward, who volunteered to pass on her knowledge to us. With reports that e-books are flying off the virtual shelves, we also shared our knowledge about e-readers, in particular the Amazon Kindle. I invite members and prospective members to join us on September 12th for another fresh topic – or volunteer to present one! I’d love to hear from more volunteers, so please don’t be shy about coming forward if you feel you could contribute something to the club, either as a member or on a one-off basis. Emily McDonald. 821860 or emily.mac@virgin.net
Rogate and District Computer Club April 2011 Update At our April meeting we all enjoyed learning from Fiona Davies about how to start researching family trees online. Having explained the ancestry program, she deftly demonstrated how quickly it enables you to go back generations and trace your life line. Fiona has clearly used the program for some time but was easily able to explain how even a beginner can obtain some amazing results. Our next meeting is on Monday 9th May, when we are fortunate to have Lesley Cutting returning to give a presentation. This time she is going to talk about a number of little, free, programs that are available on the net. Please join us, or, if not already a member, contact me for more information. Emily McDonald Tel: 821860 or emily.mac@virgin.net
Rogate and District Computer Club March 2011 Update: Rogate and District Computer Club At our March meeting we were entertained by Graham Smith, a guest speaker from 3UA in Petersfield, with his “Personal Journey of Discovery in Computing". He covered some of the changes in hardware and software over the last 15 years and showed us aspects of his own photo editing and poster artwork. On Monday, 11th April Fiona Davies is going to demonstrate how to start researching your family history online. This is a subject that will interest many, I’m sure, so put “Computer Club” in your diary now and don’t miss out! A visitor’s fee is only £5, includes refreshments, and can be deducted from a year’s membership subscription of £20 or £35 for a family. Please contact me for further information. Emily McDonald. 821860 or emily.mac@virgin.net
Rogate and District Computer Club February 2011 Update: During our February meeting we went back to basics, learning more about Microsoft Word. We refreshed our knowledge of templates, styles and headers and footers and realised that more basics are needed! If you would like to join us please come along to the Computer Club on 14th March, when we hope to have a guest speaker. You’ll find us in the Village Hall from 7.30 p.m. - or contact me for further information. A visitor’s fee is only £5, includes refreshments, and is deducted from a membership subscription of £20 or £35 for a family. You might like to bring your laptop, if you have one, but it’s not essential. Emily McDonald 821860 or emily.mac@virgin.net Rogate and District Computer Club November Update: Our meeting on Monday 1st November was centered around emails, including contact lists, groups, blind copies and attachments, as well as how to set up email stationery and signatures. We are holding our AGM on Monday 6th December at 7.30 pm to present and report on the club’s achievements during the year and give members an opportunity to discuss how they would like it to develop in 2011. We will be electing new committee members for the year ahead and all nominations should be received by me by the end of November please. Following the AGM we will get together over a drink and seasonal nibble and of course visitors and prospective members are welcome to stay and join us. Emily McDonald 821860 emily.mac@virgin.net Early December & AGM Update: Dear RCC Member, Another year has flown by and, as announced at the last RCC meeting, our AGM is being held on Monday 6th December, which will prepare us for 2011. As has been customary over the years, it will be followed by a social get-together, with wine and nibbles. The wine can be provided from club funds but we would appreciate finger-food donations such as sausage rolls, cheese biscuits, mince pies or other seasonal fare, so please bring along a contribution if you can. Thanks in advance. The purpose of an AGM is to present and report on the Club's achievements, agree any changes to the constitution, give members an opportunity to question the committee and discuss how they see the club developing, and to elect new committee members. I would like to take this opportunity to encourage you not simply to attend this important meeting but to stand to be elected as a committee member. Nominations/candidates should come forward previous to or at the start of the AGM. It will make the AGM a lot smoother (and therefore the time for celebration afterwards longer!) if we have received nominations prior to the evening, which is why I am writing to you today. Unfortunately, for personal reasons, Terry Bell has decided not to stand for re-election as Vice Chairman. We thank him for his support this year and look forward to seeing him at the meetings next year. As for myself, I have enjoyed my time as Secretary. However as the year comes to an end, I feel that the position carries too much weight and I have not been able to give it the time it really needs. Should you wish to re-elect me, I have to say that I know, because of other commitments, that I will have even less time to devote to it next year. Therefore I was thinking of standing down as I mentioned at the last meeting. After reconsideration, I am happy to nominate myself to stand for re-election, but in a lesser role. I therefore have a suggestion to make, so that the Club can continue to grow and develop in a positive way; that is that we elect more Committee Members - perhaps a Membership/Publicity Officer or a Program Planning Officer (or preferably both!) to take away some of the Secretary's responsibility. I welcome your thoughts (and nominations!) on this proposal prior to the AGM (Agenda attached) Best regards, Emily McDonald.. 01730 821860

Rogate and District Computer Club Late December & End of Year Update: Our AGM was very well attended, during which we elected a new committee for 2011 and decided to try and change our meeting night to the second Monday of every month. This has now been done and the Village Hall booked for the year. Membership subscription is remaining at £20 or £35 for a family, with a £5 visitor’s fee deductible from this. We look forward to welcoming new members in 2011 so if you were treated to a new computer or laptop for Christmas, do come along and learn how to use it to your best advantage! Our first meeting in 2011 will be on Monday 10th January at 7.30 pm in the Village Hall, when Eric Piper is going to give us some “Fun with Photoshop”. This will be an excellent demonstration, whereby you will learn how to remove that unwanted telegraph pole from your photograph or even put a different head on your mother-in-law (photo only of course!). In the meantime, I wish everybody a very happy and healthy New Year. Emily McDonald. Tel: 01730 821860. emily.mac@virgin.net |
