Facebook users at risk of ID theft. pa.press.net - 24.10.2007 16:20

Facebook users are putting themselves at serious risk of identity theft, they have been warned.

Posting just a handful of personal details on the website can give fraudsters all the information they need.

Armed with information found on your Facebook page, they can open bank accounts and credit cards in your name.

BBC One consumer show Watchdog conducted an experiment by setting up a fictional identity on Facebook.

The Watchdog team created a user called "Amba Friend", accompanied by a cartoon picture of an attractive girl in her 20s.

"Amba" then contacted 100 people at random inviting them to be her friend. Despite knowing nothing about the person, 35 of those contacted replied

immediately - giving "Amba" and the Watchdog team access to any personal details they shared on the site.

One of them was Scott Gould, 23, from Devon. His Facebook entry contained his date of birth and home town.

The team used these clues to find more information about Scott on other publicly available internet sites.

They were then able to open an online bank account in his name and successfully apply for a credit card.

The scam will be seen in Wednesday's episode of the show. When contacted by Watchdog, a shocked Gould said: "I'm very surprised about what you

managed to do. I didn't think it would be possible and I've seen with my own eyes what you've done with that little bit of information."

Internet security expert Tom Ilube helped with the experiment. He said: "It used to take two to three weeks to get enough information to steal an identity.

Now it takes two to three hours. The reality is that for three out of 10 people, it would be easy to steal their identity."

Beat Bullying

NOW

Bullying can mean doing or saying something that deliberately hurts, threatens or frightens someone.

People who bully do so for all kinds of reasons.

It can be because of things like race, religion or sexuality. It can even be because of the way someone looks or because they are bright and intelligent, whatever the reason, it's important to remember that bullying is not normal. No one deserves to be bullied - simple as that.

ACADEMIES - MYTHBUSTER as compiled by NAME

Myth: ‘Academy’ is just another name for a state school

Mythbuster: Academies are ‘independent’ schools controlled by private sponsors outside the local authority system

Myth: Academies allow for choice and diversity because they are independent schools

Mythbuster: In a rural area such as ours, it’s the sponsor’s way or the highway. If you don’t like the ethos established by the sponsor – e.g., evangelical Christianity – you may have to travel more than ten miles to avoid it

Myth: Academies raise standards

Mythbuster: Three extensive pieces of research debunk the government’s claim that Academies consistently improve results. Many Academies have boosted their league-table standing by pressuring students to swap from academic subjects to GNVQs (‘equivalent’ to four GCSE’s) – up from 13% to 52% of qualifications across all Academies

Myth: Academies are all-ability schools

Mythbuster: Academies can select 10% of their pupils by ‘aptitude’, and, in addition, research shows, their intake becomes increasingly unrepresentative of their communities. PricewaterhouseCoopers report (2006) that Academies are admitting more pupils from middle-class families and fewer from working class families, and that the rate of change is greater than in other comparable schools

Myth: The Academy’s governing body will be as representative as at present

Mythbuster: One of the worst features of Academies is that they are designed to ensure the sponsor maintains absolute control. That means the sponsor must have a majority on the governing body. Typical parental representation on Academies’ governing bodies is cut by 80%, and community representation is reduced by two-thirds.

Myth: Sponsors have the community’s best interests at heart

Mythbuster: Sponsors are a rag-tag bunch of evangelicals and entrepreneurs. Ours could be the Christian Charity, United Learning Trust, but there must be an open competition, and the school could go to almost anyone! Whoever wins the school, they’re not allowed to make direct profit from it. So what’s in it for them? The sponsor’s aim is to promote their particular vision in the school and to influence its day to day running to reflect their interests. If they don’t do this – what’s the point!

Myth: Academies are part of their community

Mythbuster: Less than one half of Academies’ staff surveyed last year thought that their Academy proactively supported schools within the local community by sharing expertise and resources. Similarly, the 2007 National Audit Office report ‘The Academies Program’ found that ‘there has been little collaboration between most academies and neighbouring secondary schools’

Myth: Staff’s conditions of service and pay are protected

Mythbuster: Protection only exists for staff transferring to exactly comparable jobs, and then not necessarily in perpetuity. There will inevitably be layoffs in the proposed school closures and, for new staff, when they are employed, the Academy is not obliged to comply with National pay and conditions requirements

Myth: Academies have state of the art buildings

Mythbuster: Newly built local authority schools can be just as good, and some flashy Academy buildings have proved impractical to work or learn in.
